A TOTEME destination in Aspen is now open at 461 East Hopkins Avenue. Located in the center of the Colorado ski town, the space draws a through-line between similarities in Swedish and American craftsmanship, and houses a curation of pieces from TOTEME’s latest collections hand-picked with the Aspen woman in mind.
461 EAST HOPKINS AVENUE
The space blends artisanal and austere in a warm naturalistic environment that embodies the local mountain lifestyle, and celebrates the cultural heritage of craft through contemporary aesthetics. Details that emphasize comfort and utility using natural materials appear throughout, and inject TOTEME’s modern minimalism with unique character.
From the outset, graphic tapestry creates a bold statement with depth and intention. Handwoven in Sweden using traditional techniques, it wraps the space floor-to-ceiling and appears in rugs and upholstery in a single pattern. This expressive textile complements the custom-made furniture, vitrines and large columns that anchor the space in solid birch, a tree common to both Sweden and the Colorado region. Each slice of wood, chosen for its visible knots, adds to the store’s visual narrative.
The space is decorated with chemigrams by Åke E:son Lindman that swap the literalness of his highly regarded architecture photography for the uncertain procedure of creating images without a camera or a subject. Using chemicals directly on light-sensitive paper, Terra Ignota, Latin for “foreign lands”, is a series of dreamy landscape-like images.
The Aspen store was designed in partnership with frequent collaborator, the Swedish design studio Halleroed.
